Kromeriz and Zlin
General exploratory visit
Which basically means the dentist checks out your teeth, gums and
mouth.
A panoramic x-ray is taken and then between the examination and the x-ray the dentist will analyse what needs to be done.
Also included in this is the cost quote or the adding up of all the probable dental treatment needed to get a final costs figure.
And finally a timeline will be decided upon and how many appointments you need during your dental visit
This means before any dental work is done the patient has a very precise idea of what all will cost and how long or how many visits will be necessary to get the dental treatment done.
We suggest you get this done at your own dentist so that you already
know what you need to have done before you come over here.
You will get an examination and x-ray when you come over here in
any case.
But some people like a second opinion or unfortunately, others just
can't get their local dentist to part with the x-rays.
Time needed: about 20/40 minutes

UK Pounds 31
Close up Oral
X-ray and analysis (one take)
This consists of having the problem area x-rayed and analysed from close up.
Czech dentists have a digital x-ray set up and as soon
as they take the x-ray, the result is visible on their computer
screens right next to the dentist's chair where you are sitting.
Time needed: 3 minutes
Czech Crowns 220
Euro 8
UK Pounds 5
Complete
head-surround panoramic X-ray and analysis (both your jawbones
and teeth)
You get this in the initial examination but it may be necessary at some other point during your treatment again - for example after getting implants inserted, a panoramic x-ray is taken to see how everything looks.
This consists of having an x-ray scanner go round in a circle around
your head whilst taking a panoramic x-ray in one simple take.
Usually used before doing implants or dental bridges and gives the
dentist a complete picture. This is included in the basic
analysis exploratory visit but sometimes a separate take is needed.
In most cases, where more than just one filling needs to be done
a panoramic x-ray will be taken as of default.
Useful to see the jaw-bone structure, if any bone cysts are present,
deep rooted infections and periodontal disease of the gums can also
be so detected.
Time needed: 3 minutes

Tartar,
plaque
cleaning and removal.
Ever had to clean a toilet with calc remover to get rid of all those
yellow sediments that accumulate in the nooks and crannies? Or had
to change the heating element in your washing machine as the old one
is encrusted with white sediment ?
This is similar to the tartar that accumulates if you don't clean
your teeth every time you breathe. Or at least if you don't clean
your teeth properly.
Plaque causes tartar and tartar causes decay or worse still - periodontal
gum desease.
The treatment is done by a sonic vibrating spatule that scrapes off
the plaque and tartar using ultrasound and water.
Also included is sand cleaning (air flow and sand) which is a circular rotating brush dipped into a sandy paste applied to all teeth to clean and get the teeth shiny.
Time needed: 40 minutes
All teeth:
Czech Crowns 1200

Amalgamate
filling
with local anaesthetic
Amalgamate fillings are cheaper than photocomposit since they are
metallic /silver coloured and not white.
Usually used for back-facing fillings or teeth not directly visible
when you say cheese.
Other dentists will quote you accordingly if it's a 1, 2, 3 or 4 surface
filling.
In Kromeriz and Zlin an amalgamate filling is 1 amalgamate filling
irrespective of how many surfaces:
Time needed: 1 hour or less
Czech Crowns 800
Euro 28
UK Pounds 19
Photocomposit
filling
with local anaesthetic
Photocomposit fillings are white hence aesthetically more appealing
than amalgamate ones.
Other dentists will quote you accordingly if it's a 1, 2, 3 or 4 surface
filling.
In Kromeriz and Zlin a photocomposit filling is 1 photocomposit
filling irrespective of how many surfaces:

Bleaching
& cosmetic treatment
Two options:
Chemical - done mostly by patient at home
Laser - see further down below
[ Note
from Pete on teeth whitening:
I have had chemical bleaching done with great success last year
(2004) - and have considered having laser bleaching next time round
but have since been informed that whereas the chemical bleaching
is done gradually over about 10 days (at home by yourself - see
below) - laser whitening is done within 30 minutes in one sitting
and can be pretty strong.
What it does is it basically makes
the whitening elements already inside a tooth explode to have a
faster effect of getting the teeth whiter - the down side is that
it's not very kind on the teeth and is like putting them into a
microwave oven.
Personally I'm not a dentist but I certainly won't be letting a
laser near my mouth in any foreseeable future - but do ask your
dentists ]
Chemical
bleaching Process:
This is a chemical process which enhances teeth whiteness.
Upper and lower teeth casts are taken and rubber 'teeth-gloves' made
for both upper and lower teeth.
Before fitting on teeth the front inner parts of these gloves are
filled with whitening bleaching liquid.
These teeth-gloves
prevent the bleaching liquid being washed away by saliva or tongue
or worse, bleaching your gums white.
The teeth-gloves basically fit around the teeth and being thin and
rubbery, do not cause discomfort.
Basically, teeth gloves are like boxer's teeth guards but much thinner
and made of transparent rubbery material.
The first
session is done at the dentist's where your teeth are cleaned,
the casts are taken and teeth gloves made by the next day.
The next day at the dentist a first session of bleaching of about
40 minutes is done and a stronger bleaching liquid is used (you
just sit there staring at the wall or out of the window and the
bleach does the rest).
Then you
are given the teeth-gloves and the bleaching liquid kit for your
own application at home - which is the same procedure as done at
the dentist's.
The gloves are filled slightly with the bleaching liquid and fitted
on the teeth and worn for sessions of about 1 hour for a duration
of 10 days or less depending on you and when you decide your teeth
are whiter.
During these sessions you can go about your daily business but obviously
eating and /or kissing someone is not advisable whilst wearing the
bleach.
The result is white teeth.
Time needed: First day 20 minutes for casts to be taken
and rubber teeth gloves prepared by laboratory for next day.
Second day 40 minute session at the dentist also to show you how
to do it and then once daily by yourself at home for the next 10
days
using the bleaching kit and the teeth gloves that you are given
1 complete bleaching kit plus teeth gloves costs:

Periodontal
gum disease treatment
If you insert a thin nail between a tooth and the gum and push -
if the nail goes in several millimetres - you've got paradonthosis
(periodontal gum desease).
Do get your dentists to stick the nail
in for you.
Periodontal gum des ease causes painful
gums and the worse it gets, the sooner your teeth will fall
out as they lose the support of the gum that holds them.
This treatment involves a long thin rotating drill inserted between
the gum and teeth and via water/disinfectant liquid and the rotating
movement of the drill the area is cleaned and the paradonthosis can
be stopped or at least delayed.
Does not hurt or can be done under local anaesthetic if you are too
sensitive.
Usually one session is enough but in advanced gum desease a further session may be advisable 6 months later.
Time needed: each tooth 5 minutes

Ceramic
Crowns
Once a tooth is too decayed to be filled, it is 'capped' by a crown.
This consists of partial removal of the upper part of the tooth
or filing it down a bit, possible root canal cleaning and filing
and then the setting of a permanent crown on
top of old tooth or what remained of it - in a permanent manner.
A molded cast is taken of your mouth and a orthodontic
laboratory specialist creates an exact porcelain replica of the tooth
to be replaced.
Full Ceramic crowns /metal seramic crowns are white and are colour combined with the
general colour of your other teeth.
The crown is then fitted and if needed re-elaborated by the technician
or dentist (filed) to get a perfect fit and chewing grip before being
cemented into place for good.
This is not an implant. Implant being a tooth
that has gone completely (is missing including any roots) and needs
substituting and a titanium bolt is screwed into your jawbone to
then have a false tooth or crown screwed onto it permanently. See
below.
Time
needed:
Between the making of the casts and preparing the tooth
for the crown - which can take from 30 to 90 minutes- a period of
about 2 to 3 days elapses for the crown to be made by the laboratory.
The crown fitting and setting on the fourth day takes about 30 minutes.
For more crowns like 3 or more add another day or two for the lab
to get them all made.
To be on the safe side if getting more than 2 crowns you should calculate

99% of dental patients who come over here chose metal ceramic crowns.
I myself also opt for these.
Temporary resinal
bridge or single teeth
Whilst
the crown is being made you get a temporary resinal tooth (or teeth)
made to fill in any gaping hole/s and to avoid the filed tooth
splitting.
There are two types of temporary resinal bridges or teeth.
Single temporary teeth where just for 1 or 2 days the dentists will make one temporary tooth to fill in any one single gap before the crown is ready.
This is basically a tooth-from-the-tube molded ready to wear temporarily for a few days.
This can be a false tooth inserted for a temporary and aesthetical purpose.
Consists of paste gelatin ceramic being modeled onto a filed tooth or around existing teeth to fill in a gaping hole in your smile whilst a crown is being prepared or while root and canal healing and medication takes place and also to avoid the remaining part of the tooth in preparation splitting.
The paste is hardened solid by an ultraviolet laser light in about 3 minutes and you can chew on that tooth comfortably.
The second type is a temporary bridge consisting of more teeth - so for example if you are having a 6 tooth bridge done - then the 4 or 5 days wait for the lab to prepare the final ceramic bridge you would be going around with 6 teeth missing or partially missing as these have been filed down and prepared to receive the final bridge.
So unless you don't mind going around with a gaping hole in your mouth for a few days (Hi Stewart) then you can get a temporary bridge prepared a day before all the filing is done on the teeth and then get this cemented into place whilst waiting for the rest.
Possibly avoiding hard foodstuffs or opening beer bottles with the teeth for the period it's there.

Dental Inlays of metal or glass fibre pins inserted into teeth roots to strengthen the fitting of a ceramic crown:
Metal inlays are not to be confused with implants.
When a tooth root is still there but the top part of the tooth has been degraded too much by decay or has just simply split and broken, then metal inlays or glass fibre inlays are inserted into the remaining root, and the ceramic crown is then fitted onto these.
Glass fibre inlays are used when the root is still strong.
In case the root is not at it's best then metal inlays are used.
The cost for glass fibre or metal inlays is the same.
The moral here is that in some cases, to save the rest of a tooth instead of extracting it and having to get implants, inlays are used as a last resort so if you think you may need crowns, then you may also have to get inlays.
Time needed: depends and it's a fiddly job

Metal
ceramic Bridge:
A bridge is when adjacent teeth need crowns but there
is still enough of some of the teeth to have a bridge of say 3 crowns
made and cemented onto the remaining teeth.
So say you have one gap, one tooth and another gap - then the bridge
is cemented on the central remaining tooth and also on the two adjacent
teeth next to the gaps
Time needed: First day to prepare the teeth for the bridge,
cast taken and temporary bridge of teeth inserted. About 2 hours.
2
to 3 days wait for the metal part of the bridge to be made by the
lab.
Then
second session where the metal bridge is fitted and adjusted
to fit perfectly - about 30 minutes.
Then
1 day wait for the lab to smalt onto the metal structure the ceramic
teeth and the day after one last session for final permanent cementing
and any filing down to ensure a perfect chew. 30 minutes.
Price varies but
for example a 3 crown bridge - which means the end result is same
as having 3 adjacent crowns done costs
Czech Crowns 19.800

How
to calculate
the cost of a dental bridge.
Once root canals have been cleaned if necessary, any roots or
decayed teeth removed, if necessary glass fibre or metal inlay pins inserted - the cost of a bridge may be calculated
as follows.
For every supporting tooth that is still there and acts as a
support post for the bridge the crown part of the bridge that fits on top costs:
Czech Crowns 6.600
Euro 235
UK Pounds 160
(same as the cost for Ceramic Crowns )
For every tooth that is missing (gone) the intermittent tooth which is also part of the bridge but does not act as a support
post and hangs between the other teeth costs
Czech Crowns 4.700
Euro 167
UK Pounds 114
So say you need an 8 teeth bridge where 4 teeth are partially still there
and 4 teeth are missing the cost would be :
Czech Crowns 45.200
Euro 1614
UK Pounds 1102
Prothesis
(Dentures - False teeth)
Meaning false removable teeth either top or bottom.
A complete set of upper dentures for example is made up of a palate
mount, onto which all the teeth are fixed - so basically you insert
and remove a full set of gnashers.
This intends that any other work necessary to accommodate the false
teeth has been done.
Time needed: 4 to 7 days
Czech Crowns 7.700
Euro 257
UK Pounds 187
Partial
Prothesis
(partial dentures or false teeth)
Partial means you have 3 teeth missing here and 4 teeth missing there.
These are removable teeth and slide in and hook onto existing teeth
when worn.
This intends that any other work necessary to accommodate the dentures has been done.
Basically same as above despite the fact that the work involved (by
the dental lab) can be even more complex for fewer false teeth then
for the whole lot.
Time needed: 4 to 7 days

Anti - Bruxism protection
A rubber-resin removable insertion protective pad that people who
suffer from Bruxism (unconscious gnashing of the teeth during sleep)
use during the night.
It is fitted manually onto the upper teeth at night and does not cause
discomfort.
Time needed: first session on day
1 to take the cast (impression) for the rubber teeth glove (usually only one for
the upper teeth)
Ready either same day or at latest next day.

Porcelain veneers - dental veneers
[ Note
from Pete on Veneers.
We once had a patient wanting 8 Veneers.
This young man had PERFECT teeth with just a very small gap between
two of them.
But the gap and teeth structure was such that the dentist refused
to give him a veneer as he said this would split or crack in no time.
The patient decided to get a crown instead.
Moral
of this fable ?
The moral is that many dentists make millions on flogging you veneers
knowing that they will split or crack and you will be back for
more - so do get a good dentist over where you are to give you
a honest opinion and get him to give you a money back guarantee
(written) that if you had the veneers done by him they would last
at least for 5 years.
My bet is that no dentist will give you such a guarantee but if
he does - then come over here to get them done at a quarter of
the cost.
Otherwise - get into a mind set under which you understand that
veneers are for Hollywood employees only who can afford to get
them done every 6 months]
Anyway,
here are Dental Veneers explained and their costs:
Porcelain veneers, or dental porcelain laminates, are wafer-thin
shells of porcelain which are bonded (glued) onto the front side
of teeth so to make a cosmetic improvement in their appearance.
For example in the case of really skewed and irregular teeth.
Porcelain veneers are routinely used to idealize teeth that are
discoloured, worn, chipped, or misaligned and they create a very
life-like tooth appearance.
You might
be surprised to learn that while a major component of teeth is enamel,
it is not solid enamel. The enamel component of a tooth is actually
only an outer shell.
Porcelain
veneers resist staining.
Cosmetic dental bonding materials utilized in the past had the shortcoming
of being susceptible to staining and discolouring. This was especially
a problem for those people whose teeth had excessive exposure to tea,
coffee, red wine, or cigarette smoking. A significant advantage of
porcelain veneers over other types of cosmetic dental bonding is related
to the fact that a porcelain veneer's surface is just that, porcelain.
Since porcelain is a ceramic, and therefore glass-like, its surface
is extremely smooth and impervious. This means that the surface of
a porcelain veneer will not pick up permanent stains
[ --- but they might crack --pete]
Time needed: at least 3 sessions.
Day one filing of teeth and cast taking.
3 to 4 days to get the veneers made by the lab.
Day two and Day three veneers are fitted.
So after day one, one could go and visit Prague and come back 4 days
later or even a week later to get the last two sessions done.

Implants - Swedish Titanium bolts and ceramic crowns on top of them
What is a dental implant
?
A dental implant is basically a titanium
bolt screwed into the jawbone and then a metal ceramic crown is screwed
onto this bolt.
The procedure of implanting
a dental implant can actually be very simple.
Getting the dental implant
on your first appointment:
X-rays are taken to evaluate if you really need an implant or if
it is viable to get one.
[ Sometimes patients who have been told they need an implant can
actually just have a bridge done. ]
If an implant is the choice - it is decided
how long
and thick the titanium bolt will be.
If you need a tooth removed where the implant will go - the tooth
is extracted.
If you need a bone graft or a sinus lift and the dentist decides
these can be done right away - you get these done.
By this time the dentist has already decided if you can get the implant
inserted too in this same dental session.
If yes - then he goes ahead and inserts the implant.
Done.
Time needed : depend on if the sinus lift/bone grafts are needed
or not but about 40 minutes to 70 minutes.
If the implant cannot be inserted
due to the bone structure needing time to settle, or a tooth has
been extracted and the gum needs time to heal, or the bone graft
needs time to set - then you will have to come back several months
later to then get the implant inserted.
The actual procedure for inserting a dental implant:
Once a tooth has been removed or is already missing - the gum is
cut open, the jawbone is drilled and the drilled hole gets a screw
thread engraved into it - same as when making screw threads in metalwork.
The titanium
bolt is screwed into place and the gum is stitched up.
In some
cases the patient can get a temporary tooth screwed on directly
onto the implant, or if not viable he gets a temporary resinal
tooth to fill the gap.
Then a
healing period of 3/4 months for the upper jawbone or 2/3 months
for the lower jawbone is necessary.
Or is decided by the dentist on how long it should be at the time
of the actual dental implant insertion.
During
this healing period the bolt settles into the jawbone and becomes
part of the jawbone itself with enough strength to support the
crown and stay put when one then chews upon the future crown.
Presumably one feels a bit of a Terminator after getting the
bolt fitted and we have heard of airport metal detectors being set
off by dental implants.
During
the healing period, the actual bolt may come through the gum or not
and this is standard either way.
After
the healing period
The gum area surrounding the bolt is slightly enlarged by a small
metal cylinder called a healing abutment - placed over and around
the top part of the bolt to make space for the crown and this is kept
there for a few days to a week.
Time needed about 30 minutes.
and a 4 to 7 days pause follows.
If the bolt has not come through the gum during the healing period,
then the gum will be cut open for the cylinder to be inserted.
After
4 to 7 days
The cylinder is removed and crown fitted.
This would mean more than one
visit and treatments depending on how many implants were to be done
and complex each implant is.
Cost of one implant
(one tooth)
One implant is divided into several components and one implant can either be part of a bridge of teeth, or just hold one single tooth.
Here is how each component is calculated price wise:
If we are considering a one tooth single implant:
The actual titanium bolt that goes into the jawbone, plus the topping screw, plus the healing abutment used later - all together cost:
Czech Crowns 17.600
Euro 628
UK Pounds 430
The final abutment, which is the screw with a small head onto which the final crown is fixed costs
Czech Crowns 5.000
Euro 178
UK Pounds 121
The actual metal ceramic crown that goes onto the final abutment costs:
Czech Crowns 6.600
Euro 235
UK Pounds 160
Or, if one prefers to have a full ceramic crown that goes onto the final abutment costs:
Czech Crowns 7.400
Euro 264
UK Pounds 180
So the TOTAL cost of a one tooth implant, with titanium implant bolt, topping screw, healing abutment, final abutment and a metal ceramic crown all inclusive of anaesthesia, surgery etc. costs:
Czech Crowns 29.200
Euro 1042
UK Pounds 712
The TOTAL cost of a one tooth implant, with titanium implant bolt, topping screw, healing abutment, final abutment and a full ceramic crown all inclusive of anaesthesia, surgery etc. costs:
Czech Crowns 30.000
Euro 1071
UK Pounds 731
If we are considering implants as parts of a bridge the main difference from the above one tooth implant is that there may be say 6 implants onto which a full component bridge of 10 to 12 teeth may be fitted and this is calculated as follows:
In this case 6 implants:
The actual titanium bolts that go into the jawbone, plus the topping screws, plus the healing abutments used later - all together cost:
Czech Crowns 17.600 x 6 = 105.600
Euro 3771
UK Pounds 2575
The final abutments, which are the screws with a small head onto which the final full component bridge is fixed
Czech Crowns 5.000 x 6 = 30.000
Euro 1071
UK Pounds 731
The actual metal ceramic final component bridge of 11 to 12 teeth
Czech Crowns 75.000
Euro 2678
UK Pounds 1829
This is a typical scenario for someone who has no teeth in the top jaw or who needs the last two remaining teeth extracted and wants a proper permanently fixed row of teeth instead of dentures or other removable prosthetics.
So in laymans terms, to get a whole top jaw of teeth fitted with implants and a full component bridge the overall cost, of 6 implants, abutments, the whole teeth bridge, anaesthetics, surgery etc would cost:
Czech Crowns 210600
Euro 7521
UK Pounds 5136
One last small detail here.
If one is having a complete row of teeth made via implants and a bridge, then presumably before, they were wearing a denture.
So as not to go around for months whilst the implants heal with no teeth there are three options.
1, continue wearing the denture as normal after the implants have been inserted.
Cost = 0
2, have the present dentures modified so that they can be screwed onto the implants directly after surgery to serve as a temporay fixed bridge.
Cost:
Czech Crowns 9.000
Euro 321
UK Pounds 219
3, have new dentures made so that they can be screwed onto the implants directly after surgery to serve as a temporay fixed bridge.
Cost:
Czech Crowns 14.000
Euro 500
UK Pounds 341
Another implant scenario may be that the patient needs one implant towards the back of the mouth where his present teeth end - say upper missing tooth nr 6 to the left where tooth nr. 5 is also missing and the bridge would hook onto tooth nr. 4 which is there.
So this 3 tooth bridge at one end would be on the implant at position of missing tooth nr 6 and at the other end would be fixed onto tooth nr. 4.
And tooth nr 5 would be part of this 3 tooth bridge between the implant tooth and tooth nr. 4.
The cost for the implant and the topping crown tooth nr 6
The actual titanium bolt that goes into the jawbone, plus the topping screw, plus the healing abutment used later - all together cost:
Czech Crowns 17.600
Euro 628
UK Pounds 430
The final abutment, which is the screw with a small head onto which the final crown is fixed costs
Czech Crowns 5.000
Euro 178
UK Pounds 121
The actual metal ceramic crown that goes onto the final abutment costs:
Czech Crowns 6.600
Euro 235
UK Pounds 160
The cost of the other end of the bridge on tooth nr. for is the same as the cost of a crown
Czech Crowns 6.600

Types of implants used:
The preferred implant system used by the dentists in Kromeriz and Zlin is the Brenemark system.
Well, it used to be called Brenemark.
Now owned by a company called Nobel Biocare
who have made three separate systems out of the original one.
1) The Brenemark system (the original one) which has been modified a little.
2) Replace Select Tapered
3) Replace Select Straight
These last two implant systems are those that the dentists most prefer to use.
In the
UK one implant can cost around £ 2000+ and
elsewhere in Europe/USA similar prices are to be expected.
Do ask your dentist.
Implants
- the actual titanium bolt, go under serial numbers
and both the dentist and the Nobel Biocare company can track each bolt
down and hence offer a guarantee.
Attention
please:
It is possible to have a tooth extracted (if needed) or/and get a bone graft
or a sinus lift (if needed) and then the implant inserted - all in one session.
But this varies from patient to patient - the strength of the bone structure
and other factors so please bear in mind that if an implant can be inserted in
one session - or that you may need to come back 3 months later to have it inserted
after you have had to have one tooth extracted, can only be decided after you
have sat in the dentists chair over here and had the initial analysis - and is
not decidable long distance.
[ A note from Pete on Implants:
On the 25th of April 2006 I finally got my first dental implant.
Left bottom jaw where my tooth number 6 used to be.
Having very low tollerancy of dental pain, I got about 4 times the amount of anaesthetics that an average dental patient needs.
Even the dentist who did the implantation (I go to both Kromeriz dentists ) admitted that I am a lost cause but he's been telling me that for the past 8 years anyway.
I took antibiotics the day before, and on the afternoon of the operation took another antibiotic and one painkiller (Aulin) to pre-medicate myself.
Then in the dentist's chair, after getting 2 double doses of strong anaesthetic injections, the whole procedure took about 20 minutes.
I felt nothing when my gum was cut open, and only a very distant numb vibration when the jawbone was drilled.
This was done with a water cooled drill and took about 1 minute.
Another drill was used to make the hole wider - and took about 30 seconds.
And then a manual drill was used, to actually do the screw thread into the jawbone into which the implant was then screwed.
This is basically just the bit of a drill which the dentist inserts at the top of the drilled hole and then turns manually by the use of a spanner sort of thing.
The manual screwing of the thread took about 4 minutes and I felt nothing at all as neither did I when the final implant was screwed into the threaded jawbone.
The stitching of the gums back together took about 8 minutes as it was a fiddly job towards the back of my mouth but I felt nothing at all.
Probably the worst I felt during the whole procedure were the two anaethetics injections at the very start.
After the surgery, the anaesthetic wore off after about 4 hours and I felt no pain whatsoever, just some slight throbbing similar to after a tooth extraction.
The dentist said I might have to take painkillers.
I did not take a single one as there was no need to.
I did use icepacks for the first 4 nights as this keeps the swelling down.
In fact - I had minimal swelling the day after and from day three no swelling at all.
The only thing I felt afterwards were the 2 stitches in my gum with my tongue and a slight new pressure inside my jaw, similar probably to what one feels 2 weeks after being whacked in the jaw.
Only slight and this went away by the 5th day.
From day six I felt completely normal.
Well actually on day 6 I did take a painkiller but this was due to a headache I had gotten from overdoing it the night before with Slivovitz and nothing at all to do with the implant.
I was supposed to go back to the dentist after one week to get the stitches removed but I decided to take them out myself - which is what a lot of our dental patients do so as not to have to go to their dentist back home for this.
And since this is something myself and the dentists here reccomend to patients as a no big deal - I wanted to see just how easy or hard this was going to be to do a diy job on removing the stitches.
I did this with tweezers, scissors ( a cigarette lighter to anaesthetize the scissors and tweezers) a dentist's mouth mirror, a good desk lamp and a shaving mirror, and all went fine.
From fiddling around I now know that:
The scissors need to be sharp - especially at their point - to cut the silk string, so I had to get another pair of manicure scissors which were sharper than my original ones.
And without the dentists mirror - I would not have been able to see behind my last existing tooth behind which at the back of my mouth the stitches were in the gum.
So you can either buy one of these dental mirrors at your local chemists (I presume) or the dentist over here will give you one for a couple of Euro (they have lots of used ones).
That's it.
I now have a piece of Titanium in my head and airport metal detectors beware when Pete is around.
We've had quite a lot of patients
over for dental implants and here are some of their impressions on implants:
One lady patient had 6 adjacent implants
done in one go in her top jaw.
She also had to have two sinus lifts one on each side at the same time.
This is considered as a massive dental surgery event.
She informed me that it was not a joyride during the surgery but after three days her swelled face started to return to normal.
She used ice packs to lessen the swelling and from the 4th day onwards most discomfort had disappeared.
Another dental patient from Switzerland told me
that there was no pain during the procedure but he did feel a very strange
sensation whilst the thread for the implant was being engraved inside the hole
in his jawbone.
No pain but weird vibrations in the head.
He had no swelling until 1 week after the operation where the side of his
mouth swelled up visibly for 3 days and then got back to normal.
Another patient had 1 implant and basically no
pain, forgot to use the ice pack, took no painkillers and had no swelling.
Another dental implant patients had some swelling
4 days after the treatment which then went away after two days.
Yet another dental implant patients had 2 implants in the lower jaw, and after 5 days even got a clipable set of dentures fitted. He had no other teeth in his lower jaw.
These were removable but semi fixed dentures that can clip on and off the implant abutment (protruding spherical top of the implant).
He could eat comfortably straight away.
All patients who have implants
get antibiotics either 12 hours before the treatment or immediately
afterwards.
These serve to avoid infection and are taken for a few days.
If the swelling arrives later - once again antibiotics are taken as a precaution.
All dental implants are obviously
done with local anaesthetic and there is no pain during the treatment.
It's just pretty uncomfortable since the actual jawbone - which is part of your head and skull gets drilled into and it seems to be more of a weird sensation than a painful one.
Basically, getting an implant
is like being painlessly kicked in the teeth with a steel capped
boot and that every person then reacts differently.
Some don't notice and have no side effects, others swell up 2 days later, others
have some swelling as late as a week later. ]
Temporary crown for same day loaded implants.
Meaning that you can get a temporary crown screwed directly onto the freshly implanted implant on the same day.
This is optional but as the technology is now tested and proven worldwide, it actually is a good idea as the temporary crown helps your overall bite not to go out of place.
For example, you can leave the hole in the teeth and get the implant crowned after the healing period of 3 to 5 months but what can happen that the teeth on the other jaw might start to grow outwards into where the hole is.

Bone grafts Sinus lifts.
A bone graft or a sinus lift are almost the same thing with the
main difference being that a sinus lift is done at the
back of the mouth where the upper molars reside as in some cases
the bone structure tends to be thinner in this part of the mouth
cavity.
Bone Grafts:
Once
a tooth is missing or has been removed the dentist decides if one
also needs a bone graft.
If yes, the a small sample of the patients blood is taken from
his vein (from the arm) and is mixed with a granulated powder
like material.
This powder looks like miniature round shaped tic-tacs - much smaller
than a pinhead.
This results in a paste which is then inserted into and around
the hole drilled into the jawbone for the implant.
This serves to strengthen or even make thicker the bone structure
so that when this has set the whole jaw-bone around that area is
strong enough to hold and maintain the implant.
Sinus
Lifts:
A sinus lift is exactly the same but is done at the back
of the mouth if needed and more of the granulated paste is added
as this area may need more strengthening.
The whole
procedure is really part of inserting the implant and is not more
uncomfortable than if one just gets an implant without the bone
graft or sinus lift.
From my
personal experience up to now about 10% of the patient's we've
had over have needed bone grafts, and about 5% a sinus lift.

Saturday and Sunday dental treatment.
Czech dentists love their week-ends like any other civilized human being and they do try their best to plan a dental treatment schedule in such a way that no work needs to be done during the week-end.
However, some patients have a limited amount of time and will prefer to be in the dentist's chair from Monday to Friday and even on the week-end if it means they can depart sooner.
So if the dentist must work on a week-end day due to this there is an extra charge of :

for each week-end day of dental treatment.
Calming
the nerves for patients who are scared s**t of
dentists.
Up to now we have had one single patient who informed me before we confirmed
his dental appointment that he would be bringing over his own Valium as he
was truly scared to death when going to any dentist.
When I picked him up the on the morning of his first appointment I was expecting
him to be high on Valium and wondered if I were to have to carry him to the
dentist.
Actually this chap was as normal as he was the evening before (before the Slivovitz)
and said he didn't feel any difference although he took twice the dose.
It turned out not to be Valium but some sort of lesser calming stuff his UK
gp had given him.
After his first visit to the dentist he told me that that was the best anaesthetic
injections he had ever gotten (they didn't hurt whilst being injected), and
the least painless dental session in his whole life. (he was 54 yrs, old and
an 'expert' on UK dental visits)
And he said this on the following three other visits on this same dental treatment
visit. (he got a complete ceramic bridge which involved extracting 3 teeth
and filing down the other 7 and inserting metal pins into some root canals
before the bridge could be fitted - in all quite a lot of dental work.
This
applies to ALL patients who have come over to Kromeriz or Zlin
to get their teeth done.
They receive top quality dental treatment by very caring dentists
who also have a large dose of being humane.
Some patients have told me
that for example in the UK the dentists stick needles into gums
and pull the trigger faster than Dirty Harry making his day.
So basically
- Czech dentists - or at least the ones I take patients to in Kromeriz
and Zlin do take care and time to administer the anaesthetic
And if they do this better than the UK dentists - you don't need
to guess that they also take utmost care during the rest of the
dental treatment.
Secondary
option to feeling great at the dentist.
Mostly, patients arrive at least one day prior to their first dental
appointment and I usually show them around Kromeriz or Zlin, have
a meal with them in a good restaurant and obviously in most cases
we end up drinking the local Slivovitz.(plum brandy of 51+%)
This is a secondary, and very optional solution to feeling relaxed
before going to the dentist as most
of these evenings end in the early hours of the morning.
And I'm not joking as it's very rare that dental patients from
at least Ireland and the UK manage to turn up at the dentist the
next day with alcohol-free breath.
But then
most dental patients who come over here to the Czech Republic come
for three reasons:
1) Get professional dental treatment at a quarter of the price
than elsewhere.
2) Get the treatment done in a compressed timeline
3) Also to have a short holiday and a good time.
And some
of the past patients who have been over have bought a house in Kromeriz so they must have had fun.
When
requesting an appointment - if you include precise details of
what you need or what your dentist has told you you need -
you will receive e precise cost estimate and timeline back via
e-mail.
E-mailing us an x-ray snapshot also helps. (see faq's section)
Czech
interpreting Services and Costs
The Kromeriz
and Zlin dentist with whom we now cooperate speak reasonable english.
If you
speak english then you won't need an interpreter.
I or Carla
will accompany you to the dentist in any case at least on your
first visit for introduction purposes and also just in case there
is need for any complicated interpreting.
This service
during the first visit is free of charge and is included in the
dental appointment organization costs.
The intention here is that I, Pete can make sure that everything
and I mean EVERYTHING is crystal clear TO YOU during the first
visit.
This includes:
- The dental analysis and dental treatment the dentist explains you
may need.
- Your feedback to him on this
- The actual dental plan
- The costs of each treatment
- Other appointment dates during your stay.
After
the first visit, you can go to the dentist on your own - and quite
a lot of patients do exactly this.
Some still chose to have me or Carla accompany them.
If I come
to other dental sessions with you, I
charge Euro 10 per hour of interpreting and basically for my time
in chaperoning you at the dentists.
I speak English, German, Italian, Spanish and Czech.
Bring your own interpreter
?
You may already have Czech friends or prefer to find your own interpreter
and that's fine by us. (but is really not necessary)
We would still accompany you - free of charge - to the Czech dentist
for the first appointment - introduce you all - so that the dentist
knew who you were.
Direct
accommodation in Kromeriz or Zlin for your dental treatment
visit.
Accommodation during your dental visit.
We now book dental patient directly into various accommodation options.
Accommodation in Kromeriz:
We now have available two independent attic apartments in Kromeriz.
These can bed two persons and are very central and ideal for 1 or 2 persons with tv, radio, cooking facilities, shower corner and wc.
We also have a nice Kromeriz garden apartment which is in a very quiet part of Kromeriz and ideal for a couple or a single person who likes a bit of peace and quite but also likes to be independent.
The garden apartmentcan bed two persons and is very central and ideal for 1 or 2 persons with tv, radio, cooking facilities, shower corner and wc and a beautiful garden which is right next to the Kromeriz Castle gardens.
These solutions are much better than local hotels and pensions and here is why:
a) you are independent even to cook for yourself, have no nosy neighbours and get no hassle from the hotel night porter when at 2 am in the morning you turn up with some friends for a glass of wine
b) they are cheaper than local hotels and pensions
c) they are nice and cozy, clean and contain a fridge too which some hotels don't offer.
If the attic apartments and the garden apartment are booked up, we can book you into several local Kromeriz pensions with whom we have established a nice working relationship and we know that you are in good hands, will receive top quality european standard service.
The prices for these start at around Czech Crowns 900 / Euro 32 per night for one person.
For two persons - in a double bedroom - the price goes towards Czech Crowns 1300 / Euro 45.
Accommodation in Zlin:
In Zlin
we have various Hotels and Pensions from top class hotels to small
pensions of clean standards and perfect for a short dental visit.
If we book you at the dentist in Zlin I will e-mail you these details
as I have not yet had time to put the services of the Zlin accommodation
solutions up on this site.
For the rest concerning Zlin and Kromeriz:
Food is dead cheap, beer is almost for free... oh and did we mention
the cheap dentists ?
Dental treatment
Organization costs
Organization includes:
Receiving your request via e-mail, filtering and understanding what
you need, translating it and emailing it to the dentist, him
sending me back his response, me again translating it and sending
it to you and so on until a dental treatment plan is made and an
appointment is agreed upon.
During this process you also
receive a list of contact details of dental
visitors who have been over here recently and you can contact these
persons to ask anything you like about myself, our services and presumably
about the quality of the dentists and dental care in the Czech Republic.
Once a dental appointment has been established I also do the following:
Find/book you accommodation
Arrange for an airport taxi pickup either in Brno, Prague or Vienna
Or e-mail you other options of transport, timetables departures,
arrivals etc.
Meet you upon your arrival in Kromeriz or Zlin
Take you to your first dental appointment.
You also receive a very rare
hand made (in Adobe Photoshop) manually printed (by Epson Printer)
complete and intelligently presented guide called:
" So now I'm in Kromeriz or Zlin, had my first dental appointment and what
the f*** do I do for the next 3 days until the crowns are ready ?"
Also, throughout your whole
dental visit to Zlin or Kromeriz, I and Carla are always available,
(24 hours a day on the phone for the just in case situations), we
often call taxis for patients, go out for meals or pubs with them
(we pay for our own), I take people on the erotic club tour if they
are so inclined and a good strip-tease can do wonders as a post-dental
treatment tablet, and in general make people feel at home in a foreign
country.
And we have been told by everyone who has been here that our service
is top class.
There is a lot to do in
and around Kromeriz and Zlin for the quiet or lazy people, for the
get up can't sit a minute kind, for those seeking culture, those
more interested in a local post dental treatment anaesthetic called
Slivovitz, or Pilsner beer, golf and tennis, and even for the adventurous
looking for a bit of fun.
(see the rest of this site for more)
Last
but not least, as we now work with three dentists, we are able
to get your appointments so scheduled that you can get a lot
of dental treatment done in a very short period of time with
practically no waiting list.
Last but not in the very
least - we can also give you a Czech Mobile phone Sim card - , which you can insert into your own mobile phone
and save a fortune on phone calls in and out of the Czech Republic.
Organization services costs for a dental
appointment in Kromeriz or Zlin on your first visit .
This fee is payable after your first dental appointment where you have received a thorough examination, a panoramic x-ray and it's analysis by the dentists - have understood all the treatment you will be getting, have worked out a treatment schedule with the dentist and also have a very clear and accurate cost quote for what it is going to cost you.

Bus-loads of dental patients :
Just kidding - we only cater for up to 4 persons coming together as a group (family - friends etc. )
[ the organization fee is payable in Czech Crowns ]
Subsequent
dental Visits:
For patients coming back at
another date to continue their dental treatment as in the case
of dental implants, bridges, or simply because they prefer to
split up their dental trips over here into short stays and not
have to spend 10 days in a row here (some have chosen to come
back several times for just a Friday and Saturday treatment due to
their job schedules)
...
the organization cost for these subsequent visits
is
Czech Crowns 1650
Euro 59
UK Pounds 40
This includes subsequent dental treatment organization, accommodation booking, and basically same as above as far as our services in taking care of you during your subsequent visit goes.
I probably
spend Euro 30 for each patient just in mobile phone call costs
each time
they come over so this
seems a fair price to me.
[[[ a note from myself on our dental treatment organization fees...
Recently (December 2005) someone wanted to haggle and barter about my dental treatment organization fee and it got pretty embarrassing.
This person's standpoint was that despite the fact that she was aware that there was an organization fee to pay, and she had in fact written in an e-mail that she understood this - she thought that the fee was too much to pay for my services.
After all, (her words) I had only taken her to her first appointment, sat there with her for 3 hours, then spent the whole afternoon showing her the Kromeriz town center, booked various taxis for her, organized her arrival and departure taxi, went with her on three occasions to the exchange kiosk, and basically spent three evenings with her and other dental patients going out for a drink.
This clever lady reckoned that since I seemed to be having so much fun in doing all of this - that the fee was too high.
What she overlooked was the following:
I may spend 30 to 50 Euro on each patient in phone calls unless they get a local sim card - these are calls when the dentist changes schedule, or I need to inform the patient about something, book taxis for them, meet for dinner etc.
And sitting at the dentist may seem fun, - it isn't, and of course I don't mind going out for a beer where in 5 hours out I pay for mine and also spend a fortune in drinks and food for myself and Carla when we do this 5 times a week.
All these are tangible costs, not to mention the actual man-hours spent with each patient between the first dental appointment and all the other bits and pieces.
And I look as if I'm enjoying it all- even if on few occasions I'm not as the person is boring, gets drunk or is just not my cup of tea - because that's what I do - make people feel welcome.
She also forgot to mention the 15 e-mails and about 10 phone calls that were needed between myself the dentist and her to organize her dental appointment even before she came over here.
... but - this nice lady overlooked the MAIN IMPORTANT FACTOR for why my service exists.
She had been quoted £ 8.000 (pounds sterling) to have the dental treatment she needed done in the UK.
In Kromeriz, her dental bill came to £ 2.500.
Add another £ 600 for the 2 trips and accommodation she needed to get her teeth fixed and we have a total of £3.100.
Excuse me - but that is a saving of around £ 4.900.
So I just saved this lady nearly 5000 quid and have to listen to how my organization fees are too expensive ?
Sheesh.
[ in the end she figured out the saving maths herself and did pay me]
The moral of this story is that not only do you get to go to top dentists and get your dental treatment done in 10 days or two visits as opposed to two years elsewhere and 20 visits to your local dentist - you also save a f**** fortune - so do me a favour and appreciate this minor detail before you come over here and start embarrassing me - and yourself in bartering my service charges....]]]
We now also offer a phone number where you can speak to me directly. Our phone number for direct information concerning any questions you may have is:
00420 - 606 890 501
This number is active from:
13:00 to 15:00
and from:
20:00 to 22:00 each day including the week-ends.
If you have not read the information about our services and dental treatment costs and treatment descriptions on this website you will be wasting yours and our time if you just phone up for a quote or other information which has been painstakingly included in these dental pages on this website.
Once we get into the nitty gritty of fixing you up with an appointment, and you have decided to come over, you will also receive our other phone number which is available to all patients coming over, useful for getting in touch when arriving, flight delays etc. but is especially useful when you are here. This other number is active 24 hours a day.
PLEASE
NOTE! - and yes I am repeating myself.
When I feel that the request I receive from you is pretty sincere,
and then after I reply with what the dentist had to say and we
are getting near to you actually booking your dental visit to the
Czech Republic, I will e-mail you phone / email contact details
of about 5 or 6 patients from the UK, Ireland, Scotland etc who
have been here recently and you can ask them anything you like
concerning myself, how everything is organized and above all -
about the dentists.
Why are
these details not published on this website ?
I will no way include here details or contact e-mails of patients
who have already been here for the general public to see for obvious
reasons.
Not obvious ?
Ok, it's called respecting people's privacy.
Only when I think you are not a nutter will I directly e-mail you
these details.
And yes, I do have permission from these recent patients to send
their contact details to new prospecting dental patients.
In fact quite a few have suggested this themselves after they too had a few doubts before coming over only to discover that out services
and especially the dentists are as good as we claimed they were.
But you
are free to book your own taxi either in Vienna, Prague or Brno if
you have money to throw away.
Or - travel
by bus or train.
If that's the case - go here:
